The origins of the Ammerländer family zur Brügge can be found in Aschhausen, only a few hundred metres from today’s Jagdhaus Eiden. The existence of this original yard can be traced back to the year 1294.
In 1791 Gerd zur Brügge, Hausmann zu Aschhausen, acquired the Heuerhaus zum Eiden in Aschhausen and thus laid the foundation for the zur Brügges in the yard, which at that time already was called Eiden.
On May 2, 1902 Johann zur Brügge and his wife Marie opened the Zur Erholung (“For Relaxation”) at this location and continued agriculture as a sideline. Marie zur Brügge is considered to be co-founder of today’s Jagdhaus Eiden. The beginnings may have been modest, but they were the start of a great gastronomic tradition.
In 1903 Gerd zur Brügge (the later “grandfather”) was born. From 1948 under his direction the business became a beach restaurant renowned beyond the Ammerland. The Jäger- und Fischerstuben even then were a popular point of attraction and offered room for eating and celebrating for up to 480 guests.
In 1968 the hotel business was launched: “Grandfather” Gerd zur Brügge and his wife moved into the newly established Motor-Hotel-Strandperle, whereas the son, Gerd zur Brügge “senior” and his wife took over the beach restaurant. Both businesses went very well and the family was already thinking about expanding the hotel business…
... when from the night of August 7 to 8, 1971 a fatal fire broke out! Within 40 minutes the beach restaurant had completely burned down. The hotel business Strandperle, fortunately, was spared. With hard work and a lot of help from the neighbourhood the restaurant was re-established within a little more than a year: on December 2, 1972 the Jagdhaus Eiden was officially opened.
In 1976 gambling game moved into the house. The Lower Saxony’s Minister President gave permission to open a casino, the Spielbank Bad Zwischenahn. On the evening of January 15 Marianne Koch, actress and TV presenter, threw the first ivory ball into the roulette wheel.
In 1978 the Motor-Hotel-Strandperle and the Jagdhaus Eiden were merged into one business. From now on outstanding gastronomy and cordial hospitality unify under the name Jagdhaus Eiden, Hotel Restaurant am See. In 1980 the “Schlemmeratlas” were awarded three coveted cooking spoons for the extraordinary cuisine. In 1981, Gerd zur Brügge reached for the stars and opened the Apicius – a soon much praised gourmet restaurant, which was not unnoticed by the testers of the Guide Michelin.
In the following years the house developed gorgeously: in 1988 many rooms were enlarged, the wellness area was expanded in 1995, and with the new winter garden a direct connection between restaurant and hotel was created. In 2002 the new entrance hall with hotel reception was established.
Temporary conclusion and highlight was the inauguration of the new wellness area “EidenSpa” in 2008 after a construction period of 15 months. Here on 1000 m² demanding wellness lovers find everything the heart desires. Besides four new rooms also a wellness suite is available, which offers all imaginable comfort.
We look forward to the years – and to the guests – to come!
